Each level progression is to a newer more elaborate hospital, but one with tougher winning conditions and a greater variety of diseases present. Upon finishing each level players have the opportunity to continue on playing or progress. The game time is organized by year and players cash and reputation are adjusted to reflect their performance. Players compete against computer rivals, named after characters such as Holly from Red Dwarf. Inspections by VIPs or health inspectors can see the hospital receive cash bonuses or fines, depending on its performance. Emergencies require a large number of patients to be cured within a short time. Epidemics see the rapid spread of disease and require all the carriers to be treated. The game frequently throws challenges at the player. Each ailment has a unique method of treatment which is just as outlandish. Sample illnesses include Elvis Impersonation, Hairyitis, Invisibility, and Bloated Head. Each death or departure from the hospital will negatively affect its reputation. ![]() Patients pay for each diagnosis but if the player delays treating them too long, then they will die or leave. To ensure success, players must find the right balance between diagnosis and treatment. Doctors can also be trained as specialists to allow the hospital to offer higher standards of treatment. Staff morale is important and rest areas must be provided. Nurses, doctors, and janitors, all must be hired. Games like Theme Hospital let the player control nearly every aspect of the game world.Įach level has limited space and the player must use it economically, deciding which facilities and services to provide. The player oversees the building and day to day running of a hospital. It's still a kick, and is deep and challenging all the way to the end.Theme Hospital is a classic management simulation game from Bullfrog, the creators of such successful games like Populous and Dungeon Keeper. Still, for those virgin Theme Hospital folks, this version isn't bad by any means. Or more likely, you'll simply go back and play the PC version. The menu setup is logical enough, so once you start using the purchasing and selecting interface, you'll do OK, but it's not fast and if you've already played the PC version, you'll really pull your hair out with frustration. In the case of Theme Hospital, it's clunky and often times annoying, and the game doesn't support any kind of mouse, which forces players to use thr controller. The game's biggest dilemma is housed in the usually versatile PSX controller. It's the brilliance of Bullfrog's wonderfully sick humor that makes TH such a must-have. Bullfrog Productions perfectly strikes that balance between appealing, accessible gameplay and robust depth. Theme Hospital is full of this kind of humor and choice, which makes it different each time you play. Though this classic was released for PlayStation and PC, it particularly shines on the latter with a detailed but smooth interface that fits the keyboard and mouse setup like a glove. Among other things, your reputation will drop immensely and patients will 'know' not to appear at your hospital, and instead begin frequenting a rival hospital. But there are ramifications, as in real life. ![]() ![]() The great thing is that if you feel evil and dark, you can build your hospital and then maim, injure, or poison your patients - for pure entertainment purposes, of course. Some have more skills then others, including psychiatric knowledge (at least in the beginning), which helps to build clientele as well as reputation. Of your doctor choices, all of them have good and bad traits, and it's your job to explore their abilities. In the long run, however, the game is deep and well thought out. It's intuitive once you know the logic behind it, but many people might simply look at the blank screen and wonder how and where to begin. You need to buy everything from plants and chairs to receptions desks, doctors, etc., etc. The interface is set up by means of several menus from which you purchase every little detail in the damn hospital. It's by no means a heavily technical game requiring a career in medicine, but gamers will want to see how to built, buy, and compete in a productive and efficient way, and that takes a little learning. ![]() If not, it's recommended that beginners give heed to reading the manual. If you've played Theme Park, you'll immediately know what fun you're in for. Basically, Theme Hospital places you in the position of creating a fully-fledged care center, filled with pharmacies, disgruntled nurses, doctors with bad attitudes, and competition from other hospitals.
